History of the Run

Born from one runner's second chance.

Leroy Sanborn, a graduate of the Shepherd's House, took up running in the late 1990s. After many successes — including running the Boston Marathon twice — Leroy persuaded the Shepherd's House to start the Run for Recovery in 2000.

It was Leroy's way of giving back to the Shepherd's House and the community. Leroy was a wonderful example of a restored life with help from the Shepherd's House, and the run carries that spirit forward every year.

Many of Lexington and Central Kentucky's running clubs are represented each year. Many of our participants are local runners or walkers who come out to enjoy a leisurely run or walk — many bring their children, and we are pet friendly.

The proceeds allow many men and women, who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity, to come to the Shepherd's House and begin their road to recovery.
